A day in Rangdum

GROWTH PROJECTS

Rangdum is located on a beaten path frequented by tourists who, having reached Ladakh, continue on to visit Zanskhar. Tourism brings both pros and cons, but we will seek to take advantage of its positive aspects, offering something that we believe is unique: a school that defends its valley.

To complete this project, a proposed tourist activity called “A Day in Rangdum,” we have a lot of work to do. Beyond the work of raising awareness (a major one to be sure!), historical research, putting together the book, preparing the kids, and doing a test run, we need:

  • Help from expert trekkers in (together with the locals) identifying potential easy itineraries which would allow tourists to admire the valley in the course of a day, along with stops where the kids will “hold lessons”;
  • Involvement from residents in preparing a bagged lunch and potentially boarding in their houses
  • Calculating a fee, or permitting an open donation system for the school
  • Advertising through social media, the web, TV, radio, and publications dealing with mountaineering, travel, enterprise, and humanitarian issues
  • Marketing this alternative tourism activity through the right kind of tour operators and international agencies that organize trekking and backpacking expeditions
